August is the month where I feel like something terrible is going to happen. This August has been very ominous. I think other people are beginning to feel it, too. Your hind-brain is giving you "danger!" signals, but you don't know where it's coming from.
I've decided that August is my least favorite month, January behind it - because in January you at least have some liquor left from New Years. August should feel like a month of transition, but you can smell of end of the world in the air and it's too hot.
I think it's also the news lately. The Internet is, at this point, a bloated corpse that we're all trying to extract whatever meat is left on its bones, before the government forces us to register our IDs to a octopal multinational corporation for the special privilege of using "Reddit". Even Kafka could not think of such a cruelty.
I think we're at the point where the Internet no longer enhances our lives, but actively makes it annoying and worse. My grandparents didn't have to contend with the mental & psychic implications of sitting next to a man on the bus who's watching a "TikTok" about how Moses was really an African-American on full volume - they only had to deal with leaded gas fumes, asbestos, and Agent Orange.
Will September be better? I think only a little. I hope that we can all catch our breaths.
